My Roots in Lamar Missouri

YouTube Clip ABOUT ME "My Roots"
Sam and Eunice made the decision to move to Lamar, MO and do a little farming. They purchased a small farm just North of town. Their children, Jim and John were young teens and Janice was four. Lamar was a great place to raise children. My mom, Janice, remembers going to school in a one room building not too far from home. She was in the same room as, at least, one of her brothers. Jim was a football star in high school. He remembers one reporter taking a liking to him and reporting on him every week. When he told me this story, he acted like he wasn't sure why she would report about him, but she did. He remembers his football years fondly. He even came to Lamar all the way from California several times to support the Tigers when my son, Johnathan, played.

One day, Sam and Jim were working in the field just east of their home when they ran into another father/son duo working the neighboring field. They introduced themselves to Virgil and Raymond. Virgil was married to Maggie and they lived just two fields over from the Dilles. Raymond was the same age as Jim, but instead of being the oldest of Virgil and Maggie's three boys, he was the youngest. Jim and Raymond hit it off and became best friends for life until Raymond died in the 80's.

Jim tells a story about not seeing Raymond for a number of years, then going into a bar where Raymond was bartending. Raymond barely looked up as he filled a beer glass and slid it down the bar to Jim, the picked up where they left off as if they had seen each other the day before. Jim also has told me stories about their life in Lamar as teens. Being a teen in the 50's in rural America seemed like a lot of fun to me. One time they cruised around our local square in a car with now doors, when they were turning the corner by our present day US Bank, a little too fast, Raymond was thrown out of the car, landing on his feet running right into the window....

One day, Jim told me, they were driving down the road chasing some pretty girls. The pulled up next to them and threw watermelon seeds in their car. He also tells a story about cruising the square. Apparently, back in the 50's, there was a stop sign on the square. Some boys decided the stop sign was in the way of their cruising, so they threw it in Muddy Creek...we won't mention if Jim and Raymond were involved in that!!

John and Jim both talk about diving off the old bridge into Muddy Creek, by their house. My Uncle John now owns that bridge. It decorates the entrance of his property along with an awesome sculpture of the ten commandments and a cross. John still owns the old farm. He and his wife have lived there for many years. They continue to serve our community as pastors to this day. They are well known and respected in Lamar. Jim moved to California where he established his own roots and remains to this day.

Several years later, after my mom grew up, Raymond ended up marrying her. So I am the product of the friendship between the Rozells and the Dilles that started in a field right here in Lamar, MO. The two families, not just the boys, remained friends for many years to come. All four of my grandparents have passed and my father, Raymond also passed. I am proud of my roots right here in Lamar, MO. I chose to raise my children here. I have lived here for 21 years now and I know first hand that Lamar, MO is a wonderful place to live.
